My Partner and I visited Thailand 2017, and ever since we have been dreaming of going back to revisit the beautiful beaches and sparkling wats.
And a few months ago we decided 2024 would be the year to return!

Last time we were in this beautiful country we stayed for 3 1/2 weeks, and had the extreme privilege of visiting many different cities and regions across Thailand. This time, we will be re-visiting some of our favorites, as well as trying out some exciting new sites!

Since we intend to bounce from region to region to ensure we explore as much as able, planning in advance is absolutely essential!!
In this guide, we'll walk you through the essential steps to plan an unforgettable Thailand trip.
Here are 5 ways that we are planning our upcoming trip:

Create an Agenda

The first step in planning your Thailand adventure is to set a clear agenda. We only have a set number of days in Thailand, and a well planned agenda will ensure we are able to make the most of each of our days.

We intend to only be at each destination for a maximum of a few days, therefore it was important to map out each step of our trip and each location. From the bustling streets of Bangkok, to the Wat filled Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand, to beautiful island beaches in the South, it is important to plan ahead and tailor your itinerary accordingly.

Set a Budget

Once you've established your agenda, it's time to set a realistic budget. While Thailand is a reasonably affordable travel destination, it is still important to set a budget and stick to it to ensure spending doesn’t get away from you while on vacation, and to eliminate any finance related stress.

First start off with the big ticket items, like flights, but also factor in smaller expenses like meals, purchases, and more. Having a clear budget in mind will guide your choices and help you make the most of your resources during the trip.

Book Hotels in advance!!

The last time we went to Thailand, we booked hotels as needed only a few days in advance. Luckily Thailand is a travel location where this is possible, but there were a few nights where we found ourselves spending a LOT more than we anticipated because we hadn’t booked in advance.

This round, we are being more intentional and booking ahead. And because we booked ahead we were able to get hotels that normally may not have availability, and we were able to find great discounts on some of the hotels!!

We definitely recommend securing accommodations in advance so help you stay on budget by snagging the best deals while hotels are available.
Whether you prefer luxury resorts, boutique hotels, or budget-friendly hostels, Thailand offers a variety of options. Explore booking platforms (we use Expedia) to compare prices, read reviews, and choose accommodations that align with your preferences and budget.

Things to Do - identify your non-negotiables

While spontaneity is part of the adventure, identifying non-negotiable activities for each location is key to making the most of your time in Thailand.

And there are a very diverse range of experiences in Thailand, from Diving, Full Moon Parties, Spas, Pristine Beaches, bustling Night Markets, Historical Wats, Hiking, and the list goes on. They are all great options, and Thailand really is a country you can go to without a plan and end up having a great time, but if you are travelling far we recommend at least identifying your list of Can’t-Miss activities to ensure you have no regrets.

Whether it's exploring historic temples, trying local street food, or enjoying water activities on the islands, having a list of must-do experiences ensures you don't miss out on the highlights of each destination.

Start Packing Lists

Packing can be a daunting task, but starting early and creating a comprehensive packing list will make the process smoother.

As soon as we started planning our trip, we often found ourselves saying things like “When we go to Thailand, let’s remember to bring <insert important items here>.” Instead of relying solely on memory, we’ve already started packing lists well in advance of our trip! This also helps us identify anything we may need to purchase prior to leaving.

Consider the climate of the areas you'll be visiting and pack accordingly. Don't forget essentials like travel adapters, comfortable shoes, appropriate clothing, and any specific items required for the activities you have planned. Creating a checklist ensures you're well-prepared for your adventure.

Embarking on a Thailand trip is an exciting prospect filled with cultural immersion, breathtaking landscapes, and unforgettable moments. By setting a clear agenda, establishing a budget, booking accommodations in advance, identifying must-do activities, and starting your packing lists early, you'll be well-prepared for a journey that promises to be nothing short of extraordinary.
